Under the guise of condemning anti-semitism, the current U.S. presidential administration has weaponized and distorted the true meaning of antisemitic philosophy and actions. Countering anti-semitism has become a bullying tactic on U.S. college campuses and is being used as a means to discredit or demonize supporters of Palestinian rights.
This brand of anti-semitism has become a smokescreen for punishing institutions and activists and can be seen as \u201cpseudo anti-semitism\u201d, a false interpretation and deliberate twisting of the concept used to confuse and further polarize the U.S. electorate.
Speakers will address how \u201cpseudo anti-semitism\u201d affects women in the U.S. and in Palestine, contributing to the dangerous rhetoric of the ongoing genocide taking place there.

Reviewed the toolkit for teachers<\/a> and librarians developed with Nora Lester Murad, and the current dangerous climate in education.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has published several books focused on Palestine, including “Finding Melody Sullivan” and “Old Enough to Know.” Her other works include “Broken Promises, Broken Dreams: Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience” and “Condition Critical: Life and Death in Israel\/Palestine.” Rothchild directed the documentary film “Voices Across the Divide.” She is involved with Jewish Voice for Peace Health Advisory Council, We Are Not Numbers, and the Gaza Mental Health Foundation. Ramsey Hanhan<\/strong> Ramsey Hanhan is a Palestinian American author of the autobiographical debut “Fugitive Dreams,” which explores the Palestinian experience through five decades of personal stories. Come hear Alice Rothchild report, in person or on zoom, on the consequences of the Gaza war on health and human rights conditions. Alice has visited Gaza four times, the last in August 2023.
Her talk will include background on conditions in the Strip prior to the Hamas attack and Israeli bombing campaign, and then a detailed report on such things as: the status of the health care system, including personnel and patients; the destruction of homes, universities, etc; the hostages; the status of the ICJ in regards to the accusation of genocide by South Africa; the work of We Are Not Numbers; and other recent developments. She will end the presentation with thoughts on what we can do.

“In July\/August 2023, I had the unusual opportunity to join a human rights focused delegation to Haifa, East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza.  We visited a variety of civil society and human rights groups, including three of the organizations criminalized and banned by the Israeli government in 2021. We spent significant time on the West Bank in Area C (the 62% of the West Bank under Israeli civil and military control and the site of most of the Jewish settlements) where we witnessed and documented aggressive attacks by settlers on Palestinians and their villages. We also did an incredible political tour of East Jerusalem which further deepened my understanding of the ongoing Judaization of Palestinian areas. The last week several of us were able to enter Gaza where we continued our investigations into human rights organizations as well as the Gaza Community Mental Health Program and a mentoring program for young writers with which I am deeply involved, We Are Not Numbers<\/a>.  This trip not only deepened my understanding of the impact of Israeli policies and Palestinian resistance, but also the level of joy and celebration that is key to survival in this difficult place.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yousef M. Aljamal<\/strong> is a Palestinian refugee from Al-Nusierat refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. He recently received his PhD at the Middle East Institute at Sakarya University in Turkey. Yousef Aljamal, besides his research interests in diaspora, security, and indigenous studies, has contributed to a number of books which highlight the Palestinian narrative. He translated two books on Palestinian prisoners entitled The Prisoners’ Diaries: Palestinian Voices from the Israeli Gulag<\/em> (2013), and Dreaming of Freedom: Palestinian Child Prisoners Speak<\/em> (2016). He also co-edited the book A Shared Struggle Stories of Palestinian and Irish Hunger Strikers<\/em> (2021). Yousef Aljamal has published a number of journal articles on topics that include Palestinians in the diaspora, travel restrictions imposed on Palestinians, and struggles for liberation. Over the years, he has spoken at various forums and platforms to highlight the plight of Palestinians living under Israeli military occupation and apartheid. Yousef Aljamal\u2019s contribution to the 2022 anthology Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire<\/em> focuses on the restrictions on travel as a continuing manifestation of the Palestinian Nakba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yousef Aljamal<\/strong> will be in the United States in October 2023 on a speaking tour about Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire<\/em>, a new anthology of Gaza writers published by Haymarket Books in August 2022. AFSCs new anthology, Light in Gaza: Writings Born of Fire<\/em>, imagines the future of Gaza beyond the cruelties of occupation and Apartheid.  It imagines what the future of Gaza could be, while reaffirming the critical role of Gaza in Palestinian identity, history, and liberation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Light in Gaza<\/em> is a wide-ranging anthology that includes new works by eleven Palestinian writers and poets. It constitutes a collective effort to organize and center Palestinian voices in the ongoing struggle for liberation and justice. It explores the central question: can a better future for Gaza be imagined as a part of a broader vision for ending the Nakba through return, restoration of rights, and achieving justice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jennifer Bing<\/em>, national director of the Palestine Activism program at the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), has organized many speaking tours, conferences, workshops, protests, delegations. and other public events. She has directed and produced two documentaries about Palestinians in the Chicago area, and she works with Defense for Children Interntional Palestine. Bing is a co-leader of the AFSC project Gaza Unlocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alice Rothchild<\/em> is anauthor, filmmaker, and physician engaged in work on human rights and social justice. She has recently returned from a human rights\u2013focused trip to Israel\/Palestine including a week in Gaza. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bill Slaughter<\/em> <\/em>speaks and organizes for US policy reversal to support Palestinian equality and social justice via current\/past leadership roles with American Muslims for Palestine, Churches for Middle East Peace, Gaza Mental Health Foundation, Kairos Puget Sound Coalition, etc.  His most recent trip to the Gaza Strip (in March 2023) involved reciprocal learning\/teaching with health and rights colleagues and marked 45 years of involvement (since demonstrating against the March, 1978 Israeli invasion of Lebanon). Bill enjoys teaching and has an active counseling\/medical practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Book Talk and Conversation: Why is Palestine Missing in Young Adult \/ Children\u2019s Literature?<\/strong>
Alice will discuss the history and politics of her own journey as a writer, how she got into writing a YA book, and why she chooses to focus on Palestine amidst a prevailing absence of the subject in Young Adult and Children\u2019s literature. She will share reflections on why that is so, what happens to teachers and librarians who teach Palestine, and why this is important in a broader sense in terms of antiracist, anticolonial education.
Alice will also discuss the inspiration for her new young adult novel, Finding Melody Sullivan, that seeks to creatively address this issue, and offer a reading from the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Rothchild will provide a personal exploration of the ancient city of Jerusalem, with a special focus on East Jerusalem and the surrounding areas of greater Jerusalem, which have experienced decades of “Judaization” and erasure of the Palestinian presence.  What are the costs of these policies, not only to Palestinians, but also to Jewish Israelis? How is this a mirror of the ongoing occupation of Palestine?  What can we learn and what can we do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alice Rothchild is a physician, author, and filmmaker who has focused her interest on human rights and social justice on the Israel\/Palestine conflict since 1997.  She practiced Obstetrics & Gynecology for almost 40 years.  Until her retirement she served as Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Harvard Medical School.   She writes and lectures widely, is the author of Broken Promises, Broken Dreams: Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience <\/em>(translated into Hebrew and German);<\/em> On the Brink: Israel and Palestine on the Eve of the 2014 Gaza Invasion<\/em>; and Condition Critical: Life and Death in Israel\/Palestine<\/em>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Rothchild directed the documentary film, Voices Across the Divide.<\/em> She is also on the board of the We Are Not Numbers<\/a> program in Gaza and the Gaza Mental Health Foundation<\/a>, and on the steering committee of the Jewish Voice for Peace<\/a> Health Advisory Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grounded in our belief that peace in Israel\/Palestine cannot exist without justice for all \u2013 Israelis and Palestinians: Jews,  Muslims, and Christians \u2013 this seminar will examine why and how we, as American citizens, must seek effective ways to end  U.S. complicity in the dispossession and human rights violations of a people living under Israeli military and civil control. We  will look at present living conditions for Palestinians in the occupied territories, as well as the legalization of an apartheid  system of discriminatory laws that deny basic political rights, including peaceful protest. The current \u201cfacts on the ground,\u201d  costs of maintaining the status quo, its harm to immediate and long-term US, Palestinian and Israeli interests, and how  each of us can make a difference will be addressed by:  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Brian Baird, Ph.D., former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, will explore the role of Congress, the  influence of special interests, faith-based organizations and the media, and examine the moral imperative for  Palestinian advocacy. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Mark Braverman, Ph.D., Jewish American psychologist and author, co-founder of Friends of Tent of Nations North  America and Executive Director of Kairos USA, will focus on antisemitism and the role of theology in the current  discourse.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Cindy Corrie, President of the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice, will offer practical information on how  to advocate both locally and nationally and how to overcome common myths and misperceptions that stand in the  way. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 John McKay, J.D., former US attorney for Western WA, coordinator for a State Department rule of law project in  the West Bank and professor of constitutional and national security law, will examine Palestinian life under  occupation through the lens of Israeli, U.S. and international law.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Alice Rothchild, MD, author, filmmaker and retired professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Harvard Medical  School, will discuss the current critical medical crisis and obstacles to access of radiation treatment, cancer drugs  and Covid vaccines in Gaza and the West Bank.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Lena Khalaf Tuffaha, Palestinian American whose life and work crosses cultural, geographic and political  borders, essayist, and author of Water and Salt, winner of the 2018 Washington State Book Award for Poetry, will  share snapshots of the daily lives of Palestinian families. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this talk, public health scholar, epidemiologist, and pharmacist Dr. Danya Qato will speak to the limits and possibilities of public health practice, research, and advocacy in Palestine that have come under increased attention during the Covid-19 pandemic. The talk will emphasize foundational questions that have often been sidelined in the public health discourse \u2013 including the enduring role of settler-colonialism, racism, and capitalism in shaping the health of Palestinians and in the practice of public health in Palestine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danya M. Qato, PharmD, MPH, PhD, is an assistant professor of epidemiology and health policy based in Baltimore, Maryland. In the 2015\u201316 academic year, she was a Fulbright Scholar and professor at the Institute of Community and Public Health at Birzeit University in Palestine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
